Bread is …
The Bread Experience blog is turning 10 this month! To celebrate this milestone, I’m sponsoring a giveaway and introducing a concept called “bread is.”
It started a few months ago, when I was doing some brainstorming one night. I was thinking about what bread means to me, and the concept of “bread is” began playing around in my head. I decided to run with it so I wrote down all of the words and phrases I could think of to describe it.
Bread is for sharing,
Bread is for giving,
Bread is community,
Bread is family,
Bread is fun,
Bread is art,
and so on.
By the end of my brainstorming session, I had over a hundred thoughts on what “bread is” means to me. I liked the idea so much I decided to create a series of posts on “bread is.” The first blog post in the series is called Bread is for Sharing. You can read it here.
And, although it began as an idea for a series of blog posts, over the past few weeks, it has morphed into something more.
You’ll be hearing more about the “bread is” concept, but for now, let’s have some fun.
To enter the Bread Experience giveaway, leave a comment below.
Finish the statement “Bread is ________” with your own words and let me know why you chose that phrase.
About the Grain Mill
Milling your own flour for bread is such a rewarding experience. Not only is it fun, but freshly milled flour is more nutritious and tastes better than flour that has been sitting on the shelf at the store.
With the WonderMill grain mill, you can grind your grains into pastry flour, bread flour or a coarser flour. Because it’s a micronizing mill, you get a finer flour (when using the bread or pastry settings) so there is no need to sift it, unless you just want to.
The possibilities are endless once you start experimenting with milling different types of grains. I’ve been using my WonderMill for years and it’s still going strong.

Bread is delicious! a) duh, it is tasty, but b) it was also an easy thing I could share with my best friend when he was vegan, and I have good memories of marathoning Star Trek and plowing through a whole loaf, me with some cheese, him with peanut butter.

Bread is me. Over the last 10 years nothing has better engaged my science-y, creative, and spiritual sides than keeping and baking with my sourdough starter. The practice has helped refocus me in hard times, fed my curiosity, and given me a canvas for expressing who I am and my love and care for others.

Bread is nostalgic.
Whenever I smell fresh bread baking, it brings back memories of Mom and Grandma baking for big family get-togethers. I can almost hear them laughing over old memories, and giving us younger ones tips on how to knead the bread properly. How I wish they were still here to share fresh, buttered bread and coffee with!
